JELØYS FUGLER

THE BIRDS OF JELØYA

This exhibit was a celebration of the birdlife found at Jeløy, a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural habitats these birds thrive in, and a remembrance of family.

Exhibited in the historical 18th-century building, Torderød Gård, a beautiful manor house only meters away from my childhood home, this show was a meaningful project on many levels.

My great-great-grandparents were lessees of Torderød Gård's farming over a hundred years ago, and my grandfather was born in the side building of the main house.

As it happens, he was a great lover of birds, always feeding them before he had breakfast, and in 2023 he would have celebrated his 100th birthday.

When I got the opportunity to collaborate on a show with Torderød Gård, I wanted to draw inspiration from the beautiful hand-printed wallpapers.

As a result, several paintings have portrayed birds from Jeløya sitting in front of the wallpapers found at Torderød. This artistic choice was a way to connect the birds with the house and Jeløya, making it part show, part installation.
