Why Authenticity Beats Originality in Art

If there’s one piece of advice that gets hammered into every artist, it’s the importance of “finding your unique style.”

While being original can help you stand out and be remembered for your art, which certainly is valuable, I’ve always found the emphasis on originality somewhat misguided.

In my humble opinion, authenticity is far more crucial—and ironically, it’s what leads to true originality.

The Trap of Originality

In my early years as an artist, I often felt pressured to create something entirely new and unique.

This pursuit of originality leads many artists and creatives to stray from what they truly love, chasing trends and ideas that don't resonate with their authentic selves.

The result is often work that feels forced and disconnected.

Authenticity, on the other hand, comes from a deep, genuine place within us.

When we create from this place, our work naturally stands out because it’s infused with our unique experiences, emotions, and perspectives.

As the renowned artist Georgia O’Keeffe once said,

“I have already settled it for myself so flattery and criticism go down the same drain and I am quite free.”

My Journey to Authenticity

My journey to embracing authenticity in my art was neither straightforward nor easy.

It took a significant turning point in my life—my 30th year, filled with personal upheaval and creative burnout—to push me in the right direction.

During this time, I stopped painting altogether, questioning whether I had any creativity left.

Nature became my sanctuary. Long walks and quiet moments observing wildlife reignited my creative spark. Reflecting on my childhood passions, I remembered the joy I found in painting animals and birds. This realization marked the beginning of my journey back to authenticity.

The Rewards of Authenticity

Embracing authenticity was initially frightening.

I feared that my new style might alienate those who had appreciated my previous work. But the need to create something true to myself was stronger than my fear of rejection.

To my surprise, my new, authentic style resonated with more people than ever before.

My audience grew, and my work began to touch others on a deeper level.

This experience taught me that when we create from a place of authenticity, we connect with others in a meaningful way.

As Oscar Wilde famously said,

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

By being true to ourselves, we naturally create work that stands out and resonates with others.

In the end, authenticity is the foundation of true originality.

It allows us to create art that is not only unique but also deeply meaningful.

So, to all the artists out there struggling to find their unique style, I say this: look inward, embrace your authentic self, and let that guide your creative journey.

You’ll find that authenticity leads to a more fulfilling and impactful artistic practice.

Warmly,

Marie x
